More 13,000 participants expected at KL Marathon 2009

THE Standard Chartered KL Marathon, to be held at Dataran Merdeka on June 28, is expected to be on par with other major marathons in the world.
Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia head of global markets Sandeep Bahl said they were keen to see the number of participants increase almost five fold in five years.
“We anticipate about 13,000 participants to line up for the marathon. About 6,000 participants have already signed up. We are confident of meeting the target for this year’s KL Marathon’’ said Sandeep.
Kuala Lumpur is the ninth city to be associated with Standard Chartered in the marathon. The others major cities — Nairobi, Dubai, Singapore, Mumbai, Hong Kong, Stanley — attracted about 250,000 participants.
Sandeep said after the successful marathons in the eight cities, they wanted to do something in Kuala Lumpur
“The KL Marathon will be a family affair as we have categories for all age groups. Running is the sporting activity suitable for all members in a family,’’ said Sandeep.
Standard Chartered is also encouraging their employees to be part of the KL Marathon. About 2,000 employees have registered for the marathon. They are given the privilege to work flexible hours and also gym membership to train regularly.
The three main races for the proper event are marathon (18 years and above), half marathon (16 years and above) and 10km run (16 years and above).
For the 5km fun run, participants can sign up either as individuals or groups comprising between three and four members.
Children aged between nine and 12 years can take part in the Kids Dash covering 3km while those from six to nine years will feature in the 950m event.
Besides the top six finishers in the women’s and men’s open as well as top three Malaysian women’s and men’s performers over the 42km distance, the top three finishers in the women’s and men’s open 21km race will also rewarded.
Five charities — Standard Chartered Trust Fund, Shelter Home for Children, Development of Human Resources for Rural Areas Malaysia, National Autism Society of Malaysia and Malaysian Nature Society — will benefit from the Run for a Cause programme.
Entries for the marathon closes on June 15. For details, visit or e-mail
