Association wants more local runners

THE Federal Territory Amateur Athletics Association (FTAAA) will continue to bar foreigners, without PR status, from road races.

FTAAA secretary S. Vegiyathuman said they were happy with the high number of participants for the Kuala Lumpur City Day 10km Run at the Dataran Merdeka recently.

“Our aim is to encourage more local runners to take part as well as win the prizes.

Unfortunately some selfish people have taken advantage and roped in foreign participants for their own financial gain.

We have to stop the unsporting practice.

“The KL City Day Run was the first event we had implemented the ruling. We will continue to bar foreign participants, without PR status, from our future events as well,’’ said Vegiyathuman.

About 3,000 participants took part in the run which was organised in conjunction with the City Day celebrations. Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) director-general Datuk Salleh Yusup flagged off the run.

Vegiyathuman said the run was organised at a minimal cost and T-shirts were not provided to the participants.

“We are now looking into ways to promote running as an healthy activity. Monetary gain should not be the priority. We are happy with the big number of participants from primary schools. We hope the teachers, who had accompanied the primary school pupils, will continue to coach and guide them,’’ said Vegiyathuman.

However, Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi felt that the FTAAA should allow participants from Singapore and Thailand to take part in the road races.

“The participants from the two countries were regulars in road races in Malaysia. They would be able to give some competition to our local runners,’’ said Sieh.

Mark Williams, who is with the Alice Smith International School, won the men’s Open category. He completed the run in a time of 36:32 while Malaysians M. Arul Thevar and P. Subramaniam were second and third in 36:32 and 36:41 respectively.

In the women’s open category, China-born Yuan Yufang, who has represented Malaysia in international meets like the SEA Games, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and Olympics, clocked 43:58 to finish as the winner. Michelle Tan was second in 45:41, while Hayley Holle was third in 46:44.

KL Towerthon 2009

LOCAL celebrities will add glamour and excitement to the KL Tower International Forest Towerthon Challenge at the Menara Kuala Lumpur on March 1.
The organisers have included a new section for celebrities to inject additional excitement to the carnival atmosphere to the challenge, offering a cash purse of RM73,900.
Besides abseiling demonstrations, other events lined up are “Rakan Muda Selebriti” exhibition, singing contest, dance performance, takraw competition, mini X-race and “Selebriti Auto” car display.
Menara Kuala Lumpur chief executive officer Datuk Zulkifli Mohamad said they were hoping to entice the locals to take up the challenge and climb up the 2,058 steps at the fourth tallest telecommunication tower in the world.
“We want to encourage Malaysians to achieve a personal goal to reach the level at 382m above sea level and be part of a special occasion. Previously, we have witnessed the participants on the verge of giving up. But they showed their determination and went all the way up,” he added.
About 2,000 participants, including foreign participants from Kenya, Thailand and Singapore, are expected to start the challenge this year. Last season, the challenge attracted 1,400 participants.
The 12 individual categories are men’s open (18 to 39 years), women’s open (18 to 34 years), men’s junior veteran (40 to 49 years), men’s senior veteran (above 50 years), women’s veteran (above 35 years), boys’ junior (13 to 17 years), girls’ junior (13 to 17 years), men’s TM employees, women’s TM employees, men’s media, women’s media and the disabled.
The three team events are corporations, government organisations and institutes of higher learning.
For the locals, the participation fees for juniors (13 to 17 years) and adults are RM10 and RM20 respectively. Entry fee for foreigners is RM50 each. Teams comprising between five and eight members can sign up for RM100 each group.
Entry forms are available at Menara Kuala Lumpur and the Federal Territory Amateur Athletic Association.
Participants will also get a chance to check out the endurance course in the practice run on Feb 28.
The sponsors are Kuala Lumpur City Hall, F&N Coca-Cola Sdn Bhd, CCM Pharmaceuticals, Nestle, Sunway Lagoon, Johnson & Johnson and Koperasi Telekom Malaysia. Other partners are Muzium Telekom, Menara Alor Star and Menara Taming Sari.
Zulkifli said they were considering offering the top 10 Malaysian men and women who finish the challenge the opportunity to feature at the Empire State Building in New York next year.

FTAAA: Only foreigners with PR status can enter City Day run

source from The Star
The Federal Territory Amateur Athletics Association (FTAAA) has barred foreigners, without PR status, from taking part in the Kuala Lumpur City Day 10km Run at the Dataran Merdeka on Sunday.

In the past the FTAAA, considered the most active athletics association in the country, had not put any restrictions.

But a syndicate had taken advantage of the “Open’’ rule and hired foreigners, particularly runners from Kenya, to take part in the Runs.

The prize money won is shared between the foreign runner and the syndicate.

FTAAA secretary S. Vegiyathuman said they made the decision as their aim was to encourage local participation.

“But at the same time we do not want to deprive foreigners who have PR status. After carefully studying the situation, the FTAAA council felt that a new rule barring foreigners, without PR status, was timely and we have decided to implement the rule for the Kuala Lumpur City Day 10km Run,’’ said Vegiyathuman.

The FTAAA coaching chairman S. Arunandy welcomed the decision as foreign runners had been dominating the local road races for almost three years.

The Kuala Lumpur City Day 10Km Run, offering a total cash purse of RM14,500, has 15 categories. Except for the four primary schools categories, cash prizes will be awarded to the five finishers in each category.

Vegiyathuman said they were expecting about 5,000 participants for the Run. For more details contact 03-27152843 or visit www.ftaaa.org.my

FTAA Free To Organise KLIM 2009

source from Bernama
The Malaysian Amateur Athletics Association (MAAU) today clarified that its organising of the maiden Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2009 in June had nothing to do with the Kuala Lumpur International Marathon (KLIM) which has been organised by its affiliate, the Federal Territory Amateur Athletics Association (FTAAA) the last 17 years.
MAAU vice president Karim Ibrahim said the FTAAA was free to continue organising the KLIM so long as the date for it differed by at least two to four months from that of the Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2009.
"This is necessary to give enough rest time for participants of the two marathons. The 42-km full marathon, unlike other sports events, requires runners to be sufficiently rested in between marathons.
"There is no conflict between the two events and the FTAAA is free to source its own sponsors," he said when contacted by Bernama here.
Karim was responding to allegations by FTAAA vice president Leslie Armstrong last week that the MAAU was trying to deprive the FTAAA its right to organise the KLIM.
Karim added that MAAU was organising its own marathon to source additional revenue not only for it but also for its affiliates.
He also took to task the FTAAA for never having shared its profits from organising the KLIM with the mother-body.

5 Smart Eating Rules for Runners

sources form About.com - by Christine Luff
Runners need to eat healthy to fuel their workouts properly and help build stronger bodies. Follow these sensible and healthful eating rules to get the most out of your food -- and your runs.

1. Focus on unprocessed foods.
Try to keep your fridge and pantry stocked with foods that make up a nutritious, heart-healthy diet, such as whole grains, fish, lean meats, vegetables and fruits. They'll provide essential nutrients, help fuel your workouts properly and aid in your post-run recovery. Try to minimize the amount of processed foods you eat.

2. Eat small meals throughout the day.
Throw the notion of three large meals a day out the window -- it doesn't work for runners. You need more calories during the day than sedentary people, so it's better to spread them out with a small meal every three to four hours. You'll find that eating mini meals will help maintain your energy levels throughout the day.

3. Don't deny yourself the foods you love.
We all know what happens if you don't give in to your favorite foods: One day you'll have a monster craving and end up overindulging. It's better if you allow yourself small portions of the foods you love and not force yourself to eat foods you really don't like. In the long run, it will save you calories, because you'll feel more satisfied and you'll be less likely to binge and eat mindlessly.
Eating in moderation is the key.

4. Mix things up.
Try to not get into the habit of eating the same foods day after day. Pasta often becomes a staple of a runner's diet, but there are lots of other healthful and interesting carb choices for runners, such as couscous, rice or quinoa. Different fruits and vegetables supply different nutrients, so it's important that you eat a variety of fruits and vegetables too.

5. Don't forget about protein.
Runners focus so much on consuming their carbs that their protein needs sometimes get forgotten. Protein is used for some energy and to repair tissue damaged during training. Protein should make up about 15% of your daily intake. Runners, especially those training for long distances such as marathons, should consume .5 to .75 grams of protein per pound of body weight. Good sources of protein are fish, lean meat, poultry, beans, nuts, whole grains, egg whites, low-fat milk, low-fat cheese and some vegetables.

Digging their own grave

source from Mmail by Haresh Deol dated on 6 Feb 09.

The Federal Territory AAA (FTAAA) have only themselves to blame for the quagmire they’re in.

They were complacent and this has resulted in their losing their only source of income — the KL International Marathon.

FTAAA’s inaction, as revealed during the Press conference at Wisma OCM yesterday, allowed the national body to muscle in with their own plans.

The KL International Marathon will take place this year — on June 28 — but under the auspices of the Malaysian Amateur Athletics Union (MAAU) who have signed a sponsorship deal for the same with an event management company Octagon-Asia last October.

The deal will see MAAU receiving RM500,000 annually for the next 10 years. In return, Octagon has exclusive rights to organise an international marathon in KL for the next 10 years.
Until yesterday, FTAAA were still contemplating their next move. FTAAA raked in almost RM150,000 in entry fees when they organised the marathon and that money was used to run their programmes.

The role played by Olympic Council of Malaysia vice president Datuk Seri Ibrahim Saad — a ‘senior consultant’ with Octagon Asia — has also raised eyebrows.
The event — now to be called Standard Chartered KL International Marathon — is also yet to be approved by the Sports Commissioner.

FTAAA vice-president Leo Leslie Amstrong was tongue-tied when asked why FTAAA failed to address the matter aggressively from the beginning.

“We met MAAU president Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim and were assured there would be a meeting among the three parties involved — MAAU, FTAAA and Octagon Asia. But that meeting was never arranged,” added Leslie.

“We have written to the SC’s office and told them of our predicament. We hope they will look into it.” The matter remained unresolved as of yesterday as FTAAA had also applied for copyright for the “KL Marathon” and “KL International Marathon” trademarks

Getting a run for the money - SCKLM

Run for Fun, Run for Money.

Get your running shoes out and get ready for an exciting and rewarding marathon.

With a plethora of events and activities leading up to the race day on June 28, the Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2009 strives to be more than just another marathon.
Offering RM350,000 in prize money -- the biggest amount ever for a marathon in Malaysia -- and a guaranteed prize pool for runners, the marathon is expected to attract 12,500 participants.
"The prize money is certainly going to be a huge incentive. Kudos to the organisers for bringing this marathon series to Malaysia," said marathon veteran Sreejit Pillai, 40.
The run is designed to appeal to all Malaysians and is open to professional athletes and amateurs. Representatives of corporate and NGO organisation, and families with children are also welcome.
Julian Wynter, managing director and chief executive officer of Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia Bhd, said the organisers were excited to bring the Standard Chartered marathon, which takes place in eight countries, to Kuala Lumpur.
"Standard Chartered Marathons characterise the values and attitudes we believe in and live by every day -- having a can-do attitude, the courage to try and the stamina and determination to go the extra mile, no matter what. They also embody our promise to our government and our people to help our communities grow and prosper," he said.
Ivan Brixi, managing director of event organiser Octagon (Asia) said their goal was to see a car-free KL on the race day and turn the event into a green initiative. "The marathon will have a real carnival atmosphere. Each neighbourhood we pass on the route can get involved and cheer on their favourites," he said.
Some of Malaysia's favourite celebrities will match their prowess and fitness against Standard Chartered's team of athletes. Several charities will also benefit from the event.
The marathon is endorsed by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and sanctioned by the Malaysian Amateur Athletics Union, International Association of Athletics Federations, and Association of International Marathons and Distance Races.
More details on how to register coming soon.

FTAAA to organise own marathon

THERE could well be two international marathons in Kuala Lumpur this year as the Federal Territory Amateur Athletic Association (FTAAA) is adamant on staging its flagship event.

But by its own admission, FTAAA does not appear to be the innocent victim it is making itself to be over the tussle to stage the Kuala Lumpur International Marathon.

FTAAA senior vice-president Leo Leslie Armstrong admitted they had ample time to secure a title sponsor for its flagship event even as they became aware of the Malaysian Amateur Athletic Union's (MAAU) plans to stage a rival marathon.

"All this while the title sponsor had been secured with the help of Kuala Lumpur City Hall. When AmBank Group decided to withdraw as sponsors in June, we left it to City Hall to secure a sponsor.

"But we did not anticipate the events which were to unfold," said Armstrong at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Instead, FTAAA registered the Kuala Lumpur International Marathon and Kuala Lumpur Marathon as trademarks with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia to preempt MAAU from taking over its event.

"We had numerous meetings with the MAAU president (Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim) who each time assured us we would be organising the event," added Armstrong.

"But then they (MAAU) signed an agreement with a private company (Octagon-Asia) to organise a marathon in Kuala Lumpur but it was never tabled, discussed or endorsed by the council or the executive board.

"Nor was it circulated to the board members for their views, comments or objections. Till this day, FTAA has not sighted this agreement. There are many grey areas which have left us all confused."

But Armstrong said FTAAA will not accept defeat and has lodged a letter of complaint with the Sports Commissioner's Office "on the irregularities and non-compliance of established procedures that MAAU failed to adhere when the agreement between the deputy president of MAAU (Karim Ibrahim) and the private company was signed."

"The FTAAA council was also unanimous in deciding to stage KLIM. We will be going on (with our plans) irrespective of whether there is a title sponsor.

"KLIM was originally pencilled in for Feb 22, but Armstrong said they may have to find another date to hold the event, which must also avoid clashing with MAAU's June 28 marathon.

"We still have to work out the logistics but we are adamant KLIM cannot be used by anyone else," he said.

And what about obtaining a sanction for KLIM from MAAU?

"We will have to test the waters," added Armstrong.
