How to run a marathon

Running a race intelligently requires some technical and medical knowledge. DR JUAN DU PLESSIS offers some insights.

ON race day every runner gets excited but it is important to not get over-enthusiastic with all the hype around the race. This usually causes a fast start and most runners tend to exert themselves at the beginning of the race, thereby forcing them to run the first half of the race too quickly.

There are three ways to check how you should run.

Firstly, listening to your body can determine how fast is too fast. This is normally the best way to run the first few races before becoming a regular half marathoner.

The second method is by using the information provided by a heart rate monitor.

The third, by using a timing device.

It is always best to run the first few races according to one’s own central governor. Start the race slowly, at a pace that will allow you to go on for the full duration of the run. It is disastrous to start a run too fast.

Experienced runners have the ability to monitor and govern pace and effort. They can, most often, determine whether they are running too fast or too slow by being alert as to how they feel at various stages of the race. As a novice runner, the art of listening to the body will improve with experience.

It is always better to run a race slightly faster in the second half than the first half. Most people will be slowing down because of lactic acid build-up in their legs; but the runner who has saved himself from energy depletion will speed up and make the running experience more enjoyable.

Not only will you be sparing physical energy, but also mental energy, which can be easily depleted during intense running. By sparing both of these, the second half will be easier to complete and you will be able to focus better on how your body is feeling and coping with the challenge you have presented to it.

Even when running according to effort, it is good to know what pace you are doing, and what pace you should be doing. This will come from experience in training and also from running previous shorter races. The shorter races will help to predict the time that you can expect to run the longer race in.

The second and third methods — running the race according to heart rate — has its benefits and negative aspects. When racing, heart rates are elevated. This inevitably causes the runner’s heart rate to elevate by 10 to 15 beats per minute. This effect in the longer runs does tend to stabilise. Thus, the pace at which you intend to race may elicit 10 to 15 beats higher than that noted at the same pace during training.

As a result, if you run at a heart rate that you measured in training while running at your desired race pace, then, because of the excitement of the race, and the elevation of your heart rate, you will be running at a slower pace than you were in training, and thus will be under-performing in your race.

This means that it is better to get information from the heart rate monitor from several races and then gauge the desired race pace from these, rather than analyse training runs and gauging your race pace from this information.

Pacing strategies and heart rate monitors should be adjuncts to listening to the body.

Mental preparation for a race is very important. It is advisable to arrive at the race site the day before the race to view the route. Take a drive along the race route and take note of its ascents, descents and all contours that may be of relevance. A special priority is to take note of the hills in the last leg of the race. This is the stage of the race when you become tired and are running on willpower. If an unexpected hill pops up at this stage, it may be very discouraging and cause you to slow down a great deal. If you know the course, then you can run the race with the goal of saving some mental and physical energy.

It is often difficult to sleep the night before a race. For this reason, it is essential to get as much rest as possible two nights before the race.

After the race, most runners will be mildly dehydrated and should drink sufficient fluid to replace fluid and sodium chloride deficiency. It is important to ingest some salt in the form of a salty food after prolonged exercise.

Once the race is run, it is good to analyse what went right or wrong in the race. Training should then be readjusted to incorporate these factors.

More on Offer at Power Run

MEDALS and trophies are not the only things runners should take aim at in Sunday's Power Run at Dataran Merdeka as the organisers will also have a series of lucky draws for the expected 4,000 participants.

Federal Territory Amateur Athletic Association secretary S. Vegiyathuman said sponsors Bata, Milo and 100 Plus have come forward to give runners another chance to return from the Power Run with prizes.

"While the run is a serious affair, we also want the participants to have fun and the lucky draws are our way of injecting more fun into the Power Run," said Vegiyathuman.

"It is not too late for those yet to register for the run as entries only close at 6pm on Saturday.

Entry forms can be obtained from FTAAA, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Education Departments and Bata stores at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Sungai Wang and MidValley.

In the spirit of Olympics

Participants in the Olympic Torch Relay Fun Run at the Dataran Merdeka on Sunday had an enjoyable time.

The 5km Fun Run, organised in conjunction with the Beijing Olympic Torch Relay held on Monday, attracted about 2,000 participants. The Run had two categories – men and women – for participants over the age of 13.

Ready, set, go: Runners setting the pace t of the Olympic Torch Fun Run at Dataran Merdeka.

Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi said the Run was to create awareness of the Beijing Olympics.

“Only a selected group of 80 people were picked to be part of the Torch Relay. So, we organised the Fun Run for the Malaysian public to be part of the historic event. We are pleased that the sponsors had also initiated several activities for the public,” said Sieh, who also took part in the Fun Run.

Ahmad Lamcharak and Geraldine Low emerged as the winner in the men’s and women’s categories respectively. Ahmad completed the distance in 20:14 while Low took 28:43 to cross the finishing line.

Coca-Cola Malaysia’s director of public affairs and communications Mohamed Kadri Mohamed Taib said the Fun Run was a congregation of social runners.

“We did not offer any cash prize but the response was encouraging. We should create more similar events to promote healthy lifestyle among Malaysians,” said Mohamed Kadri.

Organisers limit number of participants for Run

THE sixth edition of the New Balance Pacesetters 15km Run is limited to only 2,000 participants.

The 15km run, organised by the Pacesetters Athletic Club Malaysia (PACM), will be held at Padang Merbok in Kuala Lumpur on May 18.

Newly elected PACM president Rustam Affandi Zaihan said the run, first held in 2001, had attracted only 600 participants.

“But last year, we had almost 1,500 participants.

“The run has become popular as it is organised in a professional manner.

“We also provide breakfast and all participants will receive a finisher's medal,'' said Rustam at the launch of the event in Kuala Lumpur recently.

It has six categories- men’s Open (aged 16 and above), men’s veteran (aged 40 to 50), men’s senior veteran (aged 50 and above), women’s Open (aged 16 and above), women’s veteran (aged 35 to 45) and women’s senior veteran (aged 45 and above).

The champions in each category will receive RM1,000 New Balance vouchers while the second and third placed winners will receive RM800 and RM600 in vouchers respectively.

The entry fee for PACM members is RM30 while it is RM40 for non-members. The sponsors are The Coronade Hotel Kuala Lumpur, New Balance, Milo, Fitness Concept and PowerBar.

Locals encouraged to gauge foreign runners

LOCAL runners are being encouraged not to shy away from the Power Run this Sunday at Dataran Merdeka given the likely participation of the all-conquering Kenyan contingent.

Federal Territory Amateur Athletic Association secretary S. Vegiyathuman said it is important for local runners to compete in local competitions as they would not have many other opportunities.
"We cannot be sure yet how many foreigners will be entered but this should not be a reason for the locals to stay away. I would encourage them to test themselves against the foreigners," he said.
It is not too late for those yet to register for the run as entries only close at 6pm on Saturday.
The sponsors of the event presented their contributions, which will be given away in the lucky draw during the Power Run 2008, yesterday.

Bata senior marketing manager Datuk James Selvaraj, Nestle sports marketing manager Ng Ping Loong and F & N Coca Cola sponsorship manager Fauzi Ahmad handed their respective contributions of shoes, isotonic drinks and hampers to Vegiyathuman.

Relay For Life KL 2008

Relay For Life KL 2008 will be held on 31st May-1st June, the weekend of World No Tobacco Day and International Cancer Survivor's Day, at the MSN Training Stadium, Bukit Jalil. We celebrate the advances in cancer, knowing that more cancers are being prevented and for those with cancer, more lives are being saved. We remember the loved ones lost and vow to fight back to make a difference in the lives of the future generation.

Today, 1 in 4 Malaysians have a lifetime risk of developing cancer. By the year 2020 it will be 1 in 3 if no action is taken. This means every family will have at least one member suffering from cancer - be it your parent, spouse, sibling or child.

Each year the National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM) continues to advance the cause of cancer. NCSM offers the most comprehensive cancer services in Malaysia at no cost or subsidised rates. Over 10 000 Malaysians utilise our services annually. We provide programmes to reduce cancer risk, detect cancer early, ensure proper treatment and empower people facing cancer to maintain the highest quality of life. We also facilitate post cancer treatment and support mechanisms. Through our services and campaigns such as Relay for Life, The Free Women's Cancer Screening Programme for the Underprivileged and Children's Cancer Programme we have seen many lives changed for the better.

The National Cancer Society of Malaysia would like to invite YOU to join the fight against cancer through Relay for Life KL 2008.

Relay for Life, an international event staged in over 22 countries in 4800 communities worldwide with over 3.5 million participants, is an overnight community based cancer awareness and fundraising event which unites cancer survivors, care givers and caring individuals.

In 2007, the inaugural Relay for Life KL attracted over 3000 participants from across Malaysia of all ages from all walks of life. The surrounding publicity touched even more lives, creating a heighten awareness of cancer issues. This year we aim for participation of at least 6000 people.

NCSM continues to work to help make a difference in the lives of people. Each and every person affected by cancer has reason to hope because great advances are being made in prevention and treatment. However, continued outreach and work is essential to decrease the number of people developing cancer and help the over 40 000 Malaysians who are affected by cancer each year.

Our aim is to raise RM 1 000 000 to advance cancer screening and treatment services.

The world is like a mirror

One day all the employees reached the office and they saw a big advice on the door on which it was written:
'Yesterday the person who has been hindering your growth in this company passed away.
We invite you to join the funeral in the room that has been prepared in the gym'.
In the beginning, they all got sad for the death of one of their colleagues, but after a while they started getting curious to know who was that man who hindered the growth of his colleagues and the company itself.
The excitement in the gym was such that security agents were ordered to control the crowd within the room.
The more people reached the coffin, the more the excitement heated up.
Everyone thought: 'Who is this guy who was hindering my progress?
Well, at least he died!'.
One by one the thrilled employees got closer to the coffin, and when they looked inside it they suddenly became speechless. They stood nearby the coffin, shocked and in silence, as if someone had touched the deepest partof their soul.
There was a mirror inside the coffin: everyone who looked inside it could see himself.
There was also a sign next to the mirror that said:
'There is only one person who is capable to set limits to your growth: it is YOU.
You are the only person who can revolutionize your life. You are the only person who can influence your happiness, your realization and your success.

You are the only person who can help yourself.
Your life does not change when your boss changes, when your friends change, when your parents change, when your partner changes, when your company changes. Your life changes when YOU change, when you go beyond your limiting beliefs, when you realise that you are the only one responsible for your life.
'The most important relationship you can have, is the one you have with yourself'
Examine yourself, watch yourself. Don't be afraid of difficulties, impossibilities and losses: be a winner, build yourself and your reality.
The world is like a mirror: it gives back to anyone the reflection of the thoughts in which one has strongly believed. The world and your reality are like mirrors laying in a coffin, which show to any individual the death of his divine capability to imagine and create his happiness and his success.
It's the way YOU face Life that makes the difference.
