STANDARD CHARTERED KL MARATHON 2009 REACHES 12,500 RUNNERS!

Race Organiser (Octagon) is pleased to announce early registration closure for the upcoming Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2009, due to overwhelming response from runners. Registration which opened on 13 March saw came to a close today with, the target of 12,500 runners having been reached two weeks ahead of the closing date.

This places the Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2009 as the largest marathon to be organised in Malaysia, in terms of participation-numbers. It also offers the largest prize with total RM350,000 prize money, with a guaranteed prize pool for Malaysian runners. The marathon will flag off at Dataran Merdeka on 28 June.

“The response to the inaugural Standard Chartered KL Marathon has been nothing short of phenomenal. Not only has it garnered more participation than any other marathon in Malaysia, 92% of the participations are Malaysians, which is a step in the right direction of our goal in establishing a running culture in Malaysia,” said Hemant Dua, Race Director for the marathon.

Title Sponsor, Standard Chartered Bank, expressed delight with the results. “This is the inaugural Standard Chartered KL Marathon in Malaysia and we are delighted with the overwhelming response by the public. The Standard Chartered Marathons held in eight other countries have been very successful, and we look forward to bringing the same excitement here to Malaysia,” said Julian Wynter, Managing Director and CEO of Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia Berhad. “With the strong support from the various ministries, sanctioning bodies and partners, we are confident that the Marathon will be become a signature community event for Malaysia and a premier sporting event in the region,” Wynter added.

Dua added that for runners who did not manage to sign up in time, there is still an opportunity to be part of the marathon, as a volunteer. “We would still love to have you there on Race Day as a volunteer. Volunteers are the backbone of any sporting event and will help us ensure that runners from around the world have a great time in the city of Kuala Lumpur and are treated to the best of Malaysian hospitality,” Dua urged. A team of some 500-plus volunteers is required to assist before and during Race Day. Key areas include Race Pack distribution, Fruit and Drinks distribution, Course Marshalls, Crowd Control at Finish Line, Media Tent, and Luggage Tent.

The Race Day carnival festivities are also extended to family and friends of runners, KL-ites and tourists. They are invited to attend in support of the runners, and enjoy the Race Day activities at Dataran Merdeka, the site of the Start and Finish Line of the marathon. Among the events lined up for the day are musical performances and cultural dances, marching band and cheerleading performances, as well as fun activities for the kids like face painting, clowns and bouncing castles. Spectators can also share in the runners’ excitement and jubilation as they cross the Finish Line!
