They’re game for 1,100 steps up to 60th floor

MORE than 1,000 people will making their way up to Komtar’s 60th level this Sunday for the Komtar Tower Run 2009.
Komtar assemblyman Ng Wei Aik pic said the last time such a run was held was back in 2002 and the state government intends to holdit annually from now onwards.
“This will be the fourth time that the Komtar Tower Run is being held since the state’s tallest building was built in 1985. Participants will have to run up more than 1,100 steps to reach the 60th floor.
“I am hoping that the 12-minute record set in 2002 will be broken this year. The Open Category will be flagged off at 7.30am and the Junior Category 30 minutes later,” he told a press conference yesterday.
Participants are required to run for about 2km around the vicinity of Komtar before they start racing up the stairs to reach the 60th floor.
Those who have yet to collect their goodie bag can do so at the Geodesic Dome from 2pm to 5pm tomorrow.
George Town traffic chief Deputy Supt Low Hang Seng said certain roads in the inner city such as Carnarvon Street and Magazine Road will be closed from 7am, adding that 50 police personnel will be deployed along strategic intersections to direct traffic on that day.
He urged the participants not to haphazardly parked their vehicles as there are ample parking lots in the area.

Relaying a message on cancer awareness

ABOUT 50 celebrities and their family members will be part of the 6,000 participants taking part in the Relay for Life Kuala Lumpur (RFL KL) 2009.
The RFL KL is a 16-hour non-stop excitement, where teams of people come together for camping out at the stadium and take turns walking or running around the track – all to raise the bar on cancer awareness and continue the fight to eradicate the disease.
The overnight event will be held today at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium from 6pm onwards and proceeds would go towards the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM).
Event co-ordinator actress and former Miss Malaysia Yasmin Yusuff said the response from the celebrities was encouraging.
“Last year, the event attracted over 5,000 participants and we managed to collect RM11,000. This year we are hoping to raise more than 15,000,’’ Yasmin said.
The fund raised will go towards upgrading of equipment and facilities at the Cancer Treatment Centre and to enable NCSM to provide efficient, quality services with state-of-the-art facilities to patients.
Among the celebrities taking part are Anna Schubert, Aishah Sinclair, Hans Isaac, Jaclyn Victor, Jessy Chahal, Joanna Bessey, Man Bai, Sazzy Falak, Chelsia Ng, and Jehan Miskin.
Through this event, which is in its third year, NCSM hopes to bring about an all-encompassing awareness on cancer so the public could understand the importance of early detection and screening to reduce the risk of cancer.
Participants in the RFL KL need not have to stay the entire 16 hours but would be urged to stay and give support to the others – survivors who have fought the battle against cancer and who are given the honour of walking the first lap.
Luminarias, a small bag filled with sand and candles would be lit throughout the event to honour and remember those who have succumbed to the disease.
“Participants are also encouraged to buy these luminarias and write their own messages to their loved ones before placing them with the other sand-filled bags.’’ added Yasmin.
She said the idea of the whole event was never let the track be empty during the 16 hours and there were no limits on people allowed on the track once the survivors had walked their first lap.
Yasmin added that the venue would be transformed into a carnival like atmosphere.
RFL was first started in 1985 in Tacoma, Washington where Dr Gordon Klatt walked for 24 hours to raise money for the American cancer Society and it had now become an international event staged in over 222 countries with over 3.5 million participants.
This year the RFL will be celebrating its 25th anniversary.

Seremban Half Marathon expected to attract 9,000 participants

THE eagerly anticipated Se-remban Half Marathon (SHM) is back with more than RM11,000 up for grabs in prize money.
Scheduled to be flagged off by Tunku Naquiyuddin Tuanku Jaafar on July 12 at the Negri Sembilan Padang in Seremban, this year’s run marks the 22nd instalment of the event that has built up a loyal following over the years.
Runners can take part in either the 21km run with three categories – (A) women’s open (19 years and above), (B) men’s senior (19 to below 40 years) and (C) men’s veteran (above 40 years).
The 11km run has six categories – (D) women’s senior (19 to below 35 years), (E) women’s veteran (35 to below 45 years), (F) women’s senior veteran (45 years and above), (G) men’s senior (19 to below 40 years), (H) men’s veteran (40 to below 50 years) and (J) men’s senior veteran (50 years and above), (K) women’s junior (13 to under 19 years) and (L) men’s junior (13 to under 19 years).
The SHM is also one of the few runs with a special category for handicapped and wheelchair-bound participants.
To add to the merriment, a corporate fun run and VIP run will also be held.
Following the success of the last run, the organising committee will once again reward the top 10 Malaysian finishers in the 21km run with double the prize money.
Organising chairman Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad said it was only fair to Malaysian runners as the event attracted a large number of foreigners, who often took the top spots.
“We did the same last year in a bid to encourage participation from local athletes.
“The fastest Malaysian to cross the finish line in categories A,B and C may come in fifth in his/her category but will be considered as the first Malaysian finisher and thus receive double the prize money offered to the winner,” he said.
Zainal said the top six schools with the largest contingents would be given cash prizes as an added incentive.
“We can expect at least 9,000 people to take part.
Schoolchildren make up the bulk of that figure and we feel they deserve a reward for their sporting spirit,” he said.
Entry fees are RM5 (for participants below 19) and RM10 per entry for others. There is no fee for the special run for the handicapped.
As with previous years, part of the run’s proceeds will be channeled into the Negri Sembilan Junior Athletes Development Fund.
“Every year a sum of money is given to different sports that need funds and we can only hope those who benefit from it will strive to become the best in their respective sport,” said Zainal.
The SHM 2009 is jointly organised by Syarikat Pesaka Antah, Seremban Municipal Council (MPS), Seremban Hash House Harriers and Negri Sembilan Amateur Athletic Association. The Star is the official press sponsor .
Those interested in taking part can contact Koong Lin Ngen ( 019-661 2605 ) or Datuk Loh Kim Heong ( 013-353 0322 ).
The public have until July 4 to submit entries while the deadline for schools is June 20.
Entry forms can be obtained from the secretariat at 11, Jalan Dato’ Lee Fong Yee, Seremban, and the MPS office or downloaded from www.serembanhalfmarathon.com.

An experience of darkness - Charity Walk

THOSE who have always wanted to know what it is like to be blind will have a chance to experience “temporary blindness” during a 2.3km charity walk on June 28.
The occasion is the Walk for Sight event whereby a sighted person would lead a blindfolded sighted person along the route to create awareness, especially among youths and students, on the disabilities and needs of the visually impaired.
State Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh told a press conference yesterday that the organisers were targeting about 5,000 participants for the event.
The main objective of the event, organised by the Region 1 Lions Clubs and Leo Clubs and St Nicholas Home Penang in partnership with the Penang State Sports Council, is to raise funds for the home.
Phee said the organisers hoped to raise about RM75,000 to help the visually impaired, and to revamp their low vision equipment at their Low Vision Centre.
“Participants will walk in pairs with one of them being blindfolded, and they can switch roles along the walk. This gives those with sight the opportunity to experience blindness, to value sight and appreciate teamwork, to have fun and also to raise funds for a good cause,” he said.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng is expected to flag off the event, which would begin and end at the Padang Polo in Jalan Sepoy Lines, at 8am on June 28.
He said registration was RM15 per person, while children between seven and 12 years only needed to pay RM10. He said donations were tax exempted.
The registration centres are the St Nicholas Home in Jalan Bagan Jermal, the Kwong Wah Yit Poh office in Presgrave Street, and the Penang State Sports Council office in Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah.

Participants should check health before walk

PARTICIPANTS should check their health before taking part in the Ipoh Starwalk 2009, said Ipoh Specialist Hospital general manager Ahmad Nasirruddin Harun.
“Participants should ensure that they do not have any injuries before taking part in Starwalk. They should make sure that they are fit and able to walk the long journey during the fun-filled event,” he said.
He later presented a sponsorship of free health-screening test worth RM5,000 to The Star’s account executive Michelle Ho recently.
Ahmad Nasirruddin said 50 lucky participants would win the free health-screening test, adding that the hospital was also sponsoring 200 umbrellas worth about RM4,000.
“About 60 hospital employees have already signed up to take part in the Starwalk which will be flagged off at Stadium Indera Mulia on June 21 at 7am.
“Our cardiac surgeon, Dr Ko Chung Sen, who came in at 10th place in last year’s Starwalk, is also a staunch supporter. All our staff members are very active in sports,” he said.
He noted that they had been participating in Ipoh Starwalk since its inception in 2004.

Ipoh schools all out for a walk

MORE schools are jumping on the bandwagon to join the sixth edition of the Ipoh Starwalk and not only that, each is trying to outdo their previous participation record.
SMK Jalan Pasir Puteh principal Lau Swee Mun wants all 1,500 of his students to take part, if possible.
“I’m trying to encourage all of them, including our special students, to join Ipoh Starwalk 2009 and for them to bring their parents along to make it a family day outing.
“This should be part of their education. We want our students to have a holistic education as education should not only be confined to the classroom,” Lau said.
Elsewhere, SMK Methodist ACS Ipoh principal Cheng Sai Lak expressed confidence that more students would join the event this year as marks would be given to those who took part.
“This will go a long way towards their assessment of co-curriculum participation in school,” he said, adding that some 100 students from the school joined Ipoh Starwalk last year.
SMK Buntong principal A. Nalini said her students had been eagerly waiting to get their hands on the forms ever since the announcement of Ipoh Starwalk 2009.
”About 250 students took part last year. This year, we are hoping for at least 600 of them to join,” she said.
Noting that importance must also be given to sporting and recreational activities in order for children to become all-rounded students, Nalini said most were glued to their computer screens these days.
“Some do not even come out of their rooms and the only games that they play are computer games,” she said.
Ipoh Starwalk 2009 is jointly organised by Star Publications (M) Bhd and the Ipoh City Council with the co-operation of the Perak Government, Perak Amateur Athletics Association and Perak Education Department in conjunction with Ipoh city’s 21st anniversary.
