30,000 register for Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon 2009 in record time

Registration for the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCSM) 2009 started with a bang and has not relieved since. When the SCSM 2009 registration opened on 16 July, 20,000 runners had signed up within nine days. The registration now sees 30,000 runners having done so in under two weeks, a 40% increase over the number of runners who signed up in the same period last year. With just 20,000 places remaining, race organisers are encouraging those who have yet to register to do so as soon as possible.

Promotion deadlines are also fast approaching with just nine days remaining for runners to enjoy the Early Bird promotion. All runners, however, still have the opportunity to run for free and help charity at the same time by signing up for the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon’s ‘Run for a Cause’ initiative. Runners in this category who raise at least S$300 for the event’s three adopted charities – Bukit Ho Swee Family Service Centre; Lions Befrienders and the Rainbow Centre Yishun Park School – will get their registration fee waived. Race organisers are targetting to raise a total of S$350,000 to help improve the lives of the underprivileged, the elderly and the disabled in the local community.

Co-chairman of the Organising Committee of the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon and President of the Singapore Athletic Association Mr Loh Lin Kok said, “We are overwhelmed by the fantastic response that we have received since registration opened on 16 July 2009. This event never fails to astound me with its mass appeal. I only wish we could accommodate all interested parties; but so as to furnish a favourable race experience, we are capping it at 50 000 runners, despite the traction in registration. I can promise all participants that race day will not only be a day to remember but another great step towards our goal of becoming one of the best marathons in the region and the world.”

Runners can sign up by visiting the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon’s official website at www.singaporemarathon.com.
