Participants should check health before walk

PARTICIPANTS should check their health before taking part in the Ipoh Starwalk 2009, said Ipoh Specialist Hospital general manager Ahmad Nasirruddin Harun.
“Participants should ensure that they do not have any injuries before taking part in Starwalk. They should make sure that they are fit and able to walk the long journey during the fun-filled event,” he said.
He later presented a sponsorship of free health-screening test worth RM5,000 to The Star’s account executive Michelle Ho recently.
Ahmad Nasirruddin said 50 lucky participants would win the free health-screening test, adding that the hospital was also sponsoring 200 umbrellas worth about RM4,000.
“About 60 hospital employees have already signed up to take part in the Starwalk which will be flagged off at Stadium Indera Mulia on June 21 at 7am.
“Our cardiac surgeon, Dr Ko Chung Sen, who came in at 10th place in last year’s Starwalk, is also a staunch supporter. All our staff members are very active in sports,” he said.
He noted that they had been participating in Ipoh Starwalk since its inception in 2004.

Goodies galore for walkers

SPORTS afficionados who have signed up for Ipoh Starwalk 2009 can look forward to many treats in their goodie bags, courtesy of several sponsors.
Ipoh Starwalk 2009 is jointly organised by Star Publications (M) Bhd and the Ipoh City Council with the cooperation of the Perak Government, Perak Amateur Athletics Association and Perak Education Department in conjunction with Ipoh city’s 21st anniversary. It will be flagged off at 7am on June 21 from Stadium Indera Mulia.

Representatives from the sponsor companies were at Menara Star in Petaling Jaya recently to hand over goodies comprising products useful for those leading an active lifestyle and cash redemption vouchers for skin and body treatments. Also sponsored were prizes for the event.
Ginvera Marketing Enterprise Sdn Bhd assistant product manager Wee Tong said the company would be sponsoring Ginvera Real SPA Shower Sachet Card 24gm (10,000 units), Bio-essence Tanaka White 3-in-1 Sachet Card (1,000 units) and Syahirah Gel Pengelupasan 5gm and Body Losyen Sachet Card 5gm (5,000 units) worth RM43, 000.
“Ten units of Ebene Sports Knee Guard medium size worth RM1,180 will be given away as lucky draw items, bringing the total sponsorship to RM44,180,” he added.
As remedy for aches, pains and injuries after the walk, Vifor of Zuelling Pharma Distribution will be sponsoring 5,000 Perskindol Classic Gel Sachets and 5,000 Perskindol Cool Gel Sachets worth a total of RM10,000.
Zuellig Pharma Sdn Bhd national sales manager-BU 3 consumer healthcare division Yong Kooi Yoke said the Swiss-manufactured products prevented cramps and offered pain relief due to sprains, cramps, stiff necks, strains and backaches.
According to Clara International Beauty Group Sdn Bhd business development and marketing manager Jason Woo, the cash redemption vouchers would be useful for men and women as the company catered for both genders. He also said the home-grown brand was sponsoring three hampers worth RM6,000 as prizes.

If you are hoping to smell good after the walk, put in the extra effort to come out tops because Beiersdorf Singapore Pte Ltd is giving away Nivea for Men Silver Protect range of roll-ons, deodrants and sprays worth RM5,000.
The company’s senior brand manager, Angie Tan, said the range was effective in eliminating 99% of the bacteria which causes body odour. She said the company was also sponsoring Hansaplast plasters.

Sports attire for winners

THE top three winners from each of the nine competitive categories of the Ipoh Star-walk 2009 will take home Joma apparels.
Ever Well Sports (M) Sdn Bhd has stepped in yet again for the fourth time to sponsor the annual event and this time, it is offering about RM10,000 worth of prizes.
Its administrative manager Michelle Chow said first prize winners in all nine competitive categories would each receive a Joma jersey.
“Second placing winners will win a Joma Polo T-shirt while third place winners will take home a Joma round-collared T-shirt,” she said after presenting the sponsorship to The Star’s advertising representative Tan Cheok Tong in Ipoh yesterday.

Chow said Joma also sponsored the Perak, Kuala Muda Naza and KL PLUS football teams in the local football scene.

Ipoh schools all out for a walk

MORE schools are jumping on the bandwagon to join the sixth edition of the Ipoh Starwalk and not only that, each is trying to outdo their previous participation record.
SMK Jalan Pasir Puteh principal Lau Swee Mun wants all 1,500 of his students to take part, if possible.
“I’m trying to encourage all of them, including our special students, to join Ipoh Starwalk 2009 and for them to bring their parents along to make it a family day outing.
“This should be part of their education. We want our students to have a holistic education as education should not only be confined to the classroom,” Lau said.

Elsewhere, SMK Methodist ACS Ipoh principal Cheng Sai Lak expressed confidence that more students would join the event this year as marks would be given to those who took part.
“This will go a long way towards their assessment of co-curriculum participation in school,” he said, adding that some 100 students from the school joined Ipoh Starwalk last year.
SMK Buntong principal A. Nalini said her students had been eagerly waiting to get their hands on the forms ever since the announcement of Ipoh Starwalk 2009.
”About 250 students took part last year. This year, we are hoping for at least 600 of them to join,” she said.

Noting that importance must also be given to sporting and recreational activities in order for children to become all-rounded students, Nalini said most were glued to their computer screens these days.
“Some do not even come out of their rooms and the only games that they play are computer games,” she said.

Beeline for entry forms

SMJK Sam Tet, a big fan of the Ipoh Starwalk, is again the first school to pick up entry forms for the annual event.
Principal Phang Yoon Ming and senior assistant Hee Park Chee handed out the forms to the students on Monday when entries for the June 21 walk opened.
Phang hoped to get at least 2,000 students to sign up compared to the 1,500 who took part in l"The school term for Lower Six students starts next month. We'll be getting them to join the walk as well," he said.
The school, Phang noted, strongly encouraged its students to participate in the event as they would be awarded merit points for participating in co-curricular activities.
The school, which has a current enrolment of about 2,600, has been faithfully participating in the Ipoh Starwalk since it was introduced in 2004.
Following in SMJK Sam Tet's footsteps were SMJK Ave Maria Convent and SMK Perempuan Methodist Ipoh which handed out the entry forms to their students yesterday.
SMJK Ave Maria Convent principal Chen Chiu Hiong said the school would try to get all its 2,000 students to sign up. ast year's Ipoh Starwalk.

"We will encourage all our teachers to participate as well," said Chen after receiving the entry forms from The Star's V. Sreedaran Nair at the school yesterday.
She said a record 1,500 students from the school took part in the walk last year.
SMK Perempuan Methodist Ipoh principal Soot Mooy Ching said 1,200-odd students took part in last year's walk and they would try to match or increase the number this year.
"The response from the students has always been overwhelming," Soot said.
One of Perak's most exciting sporting events, Ipoh Starwalk 2009 will be flagged off from Stadium Indera Mulia at 7am on June 21.
It is jointly organised by Star Publications (M) Bhd and the Ipoh City Council with the co-operation of the Perak Government, Perak Amateur Athletics Association and Perak Education Department in conjunction with Ipoh city's 21st anniversary.
There will be two categories ? non-competition and competition. The distance for both categories is 10km.

Entry fee for non-competition walkers is RM8 per person while competition walkers will be charged RM12 each.
The public can register at The Star's office at No 39, Jalan Hussein, Ipoh, from 9am to 5pm on weekdays, except public holidays.
