Kenyans dominate road marathon

Kenyan long-distance runners dominated the 2007 Adidas NPE King of the Road Marathon yesterday, which started and ended at the Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall in Bandar Sunway here.

Their male and female runners grabbed the top three positions of the newly-introduced 21km Open category.

In the previous year, the events were for the 10km, 7km and 5km categories only.

Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu flagged off about 8,000 participants at the elevated New Pantai Expressway (NPE) in front of the mall.

In the men's open category, Geoffery Kipitoh, 21, clocked 1'00:03 and beat his compatriot Phillip Kipfoo, who came to the finishing line 12 seconds later while Felix Marube finished third in 1'00:56.

“I'm happy to win my first race in Malaysia. Previously, I participated in four competitions in Malaysia. I was the runner-up in the Ipoh Marathon, fourth in the Penang Bridge Run and fifth at the Seimens Run,” said Kipitoh, who became a long-distance runner at the age of 18.

Kipitoh received RM3,000 for his effort with Kipfoo and Marube receiving RM2,500 and RM2,000 respectively.

In the women's Open category, Frida Chepkite Ladepa won the race in 1'12:56.

Ladepa walked away with RM3,000 for her victory while compatriot Kigen Carolline, who clocked 1'17:07 and Rael Jeptoomaren (1'19:36) collected RM2,500 and RM2,000 respectively

It is quite sad event for KP&Geng,out of 5 members... 1 did not participate while the other 3 down with injuries.. Raymond cant finished the race after knee injured.. TH struggling with food poisoining ( dont know vomit how many times during the races ) while myself, i already decided not to push myself too hard because of my ligament injured and i also know that that is no way for me to finished below 1:45 with this type of condition. My target is to finish below 2hrs and get the medal. I prefer no to extent my ligament injuries and rather to perform better during next week PJ Half.

The race starting on time, it is better compared to my last 2 previous runs, which have horrible staring that is Melaka Half and KL 10K... I starting my pace with TH side by side while SC just in front of us... our fren still cant change his habit with sprinting from the starting line... when we finished the first 3 km... Ferdinand just in front of me... haha, quite good result for his maiden half m... by leading me all the way until the last 1KM.. he can win me if not because of SC. Doesnt matter, we are going to continue on PJ Half.

After 5km, i finished with 25:48, about 3 mins late compared to the last 2 races..TH start struggling with his stomach pain again and slow down.. then i just pace with SC.. as usual our fren dont like to pace with me during the race which he always thought that i will give him pressure..so i just move forward.. After a while, I saw Chris just beside me... so look for new pacer again...

I finished my 11km at 57mins, 4 minutes slow liao.. my ligament starting to give me warning... my goodness another 10km to go... after a while, opposite the road, pass by SC, TH, CY and Uncle Ong. SC still in ok conditions but TH look quite pale.. CY give me a bit surprise result at the first 9km run... quite close to TH. my ligament pain starting worse even i wear the knee support.. i have no choice but just to slow down, i think by that time my timing for 1km is about 6min or could be more than 6min.

Hahaha, this type of condition, can foresee for another struggling run again..the distance between myself and Ferd. also increase to 150 or 200m.. after KM19, Choi come to pace with me..so i just decided to pace with him until the finishing points.. Suddenly when move to the cut and cover tunnel... SC just quickly pass both of us.. Wah, kan chung liao... i told CHoi, that is my geng... so must pia with him liao..by this time, i really cannot care for ligament pain or whatever liao... finish the race and beat SC first ( bro.. sorry ar, cannot give water first... i still want to maintain my 21km postion lar.. your performance are quite consistent now.. carry on.)

TH also perform his ending pia spirit...well done...struggling with no regret after got the medal. Uncle Ong going back with medal and position.. CY puncit after 10KM, managed to complete in 2:24 for his maiden Half M while PL, thank god.. u didnt get loss and managed to complete the race.. dont complaint with ur breathless for last 100m... by the time when u saw ur handsome photo from Mr Tey, everything is worth.

Raymond, down with knee injury... take care and get well soon.

Kenyan Kiptoo among entries for ‘King of the Road’ race

More than 80 foreign runners including 2007 Penang Bridge Run winner Sammy Kiprop Kiptoo from Kenya are among the 10,000 participants registered for the 'King of the Road’ marathon which will be held on the New Pantai Highway here on Aug 5.

New Pantai Expressway Sdn Bhd (NPE) managing director Neoh Soon Hiong said the event, the first ever marathon held on an elavated highway, has attracted 40 Singaporeans, 20 Thais, 20 Kenyans and 5,000 school children.

“Besides them, about 5,000 participants have registered. The closing date is today but we will still accept late entries,” said Soon Hiong yesterday.

He said the ‘King of the Road’ marathon which is in its ninth edition since 1996 would for the first time feature a 21km half-marathon event.

In the previous year, the events were for the 10, 7 and 5km categories only.

The 21km event will start at Sunway Pyramid to the Kewajipan Roundabout in Subang Jaya and back to Sunway Pyramid for the finishing line.

“We have to close the entire stretch of NPE, starting from Kewajipan roundabout in Subang Jaya to the Kuchai Interchange at KL-Seremban Highway, including all 23 junctions or interchanges, for all traffic from 5am to 10am on that day.

“The total closure of the highway will make the event the safest marathon compared to other events held at highways,” he said.

Winner of the 21km event will take home RM3,000, runners-up RM2,500 and third place will receive RM2,000.

“My only aim is to be the champion in every run,” said the former bank employee who has bagged at least 10 medals this year in local and international runs.
The 38-year-old athlete said, “I train harder and harder each day. I know there is always someone younger and stronger chasing from behind, so I have to run fast.”
Another runner, Sharul Ambri Mohd Noor, shares Devamani’s strong will to win.
“It is the thrill and joy of winning that spur me to go forward,” said the 33-year-old personal driver.
The two are among an expected 10,000 runners who will participate in the coming NPE Adidas King of the Road 2007, which Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Donald Lim launched at Bukit Kiara Equestrian and Country Resort recently.
Jointly organised by Adidas, Majlis Sukan Sekolah-Sekolah Malaysia (MSSM) and New Pantai Expressway (NPE), the run will flag off at Sunway Pyramid on Aug 5.
A 21km half-marathon is being included this year to attract the participation of local runners, in addition to the usual 10km, 7km and 5km runs.
This will be the first time in Malaysian history that a run is held along an elevated highway.
To accommodate the run, the highway will be closed temporarily from 5am to 10am on the morning.
There are 14 categories in all and each participant will receive an exclusive NPE adidas King of the Road 2007 limited edition running vest, certificate of participation and a 30% discount voucher for adidas products.
The champions in the Men’s and Women’s Open categories will receive RM3,000 each and the top three finishers in each category will also receive adidas sunglasses.
Registration is currently open at adidas KL Sentral and Bukit Damansara. The fee ranges from RM5 to RM30, depending on the category.
The last day for registration is July 21.
