Run organisers promise a problem-free run

THE organisers of the Shah Alam-adidas-King of the Road, to be flagged off at the Shah Alam Stadium on Aug 2, have promised that there will be no hiccups.
Race director G. Mohan said they would like ensure participants that the run, organised by adidas and Shah Alam City Council (MBSA), would be well co-ordinated.
“The route is new as the run will start and end at the Shah Alam Stadium. Our marshals will be at strategic locations to oversee the participants. We are confident that the run will be a success.
“We also have the support of the police as well as MBSA.
“All marshals involved in the run will be going on a route survey on Aug 1 and we will brief them on our expectations,’’ said Mohan.
There was concern among participants after the fiasco during the recent Standard Chartered KL Marathon as well as the Ipoh International Marathon. Both the events were marred by allegations of lack of signages, drinking stations as well as wrong results.
In Ipoh, several top runners had alleged that the marshal had led them on the wrong route.
Shah Alam mayor Mazalan Md Noor said they were pleased to work with adidas and other sponsors in organising the run.
“We certainly would like the adidas-King of the Road to be a memorable one for the participants.
“We will deploy about 200 enforcement officers to ensure that the run is conducted in a orderly manner,’’ said Mazalan after a sponsorship ceremony.
The co-sponsors of the run are Milo, PowerBar, 100 Plus, adidas timewear and adidas eyewear.
The run has 12 categories, incorporating 22km, 11km, 8km and 6km, catering for all age groups. Prizes will be awarded to the top 10 finishers in each category.
About 5,000 participants, including 50 foreigners, have registered for the run. But Mazalan said they were expecting the number to increase to 7,000 on race day. For details, contact 03-2080 4876.

Disabled want other runs to include category

PARALYMPIAN Mat Sani Kasbun has urged local road race organisers to include a category for the disabled as well as the wheelchair-bound.
The 43-year-old Mat Sani, who won the men’s wheelchair category in the Seremban Half Marathon (SHM), said disabled athletes were often not given the opportunity to be involved in “We have won medals in international competitions. Malaysia is a developing nation but the needs of the disabled are forgotten. In the sporting arena, there are few events for the disabled community.
“As a Negri-born athlete, I am proud the SHM had included the disabled community from its inception in 1987. Why don’t other runs like the Ipoh Half Marathon and the Penang Bridge Run follow suit?,” he asked.
Mat Sani, a father of two, had not missed the SHM but hoped the wheelchair event would be extended to 10km distance or 21km.
“Although we are grateful to the organisers for including us, we could do with a more challenging race.
“In the past, I have participated in marathons in Japan, South Korea and Vietnam. In fact, I have often managed to come within the top 10,” he said.
Husband-and-wife team Anthony Martin and Chow Mei Hsia, both disabled athletes, who had represented the country, shared Mat Sani sentiments.
“We look forward to participating in these events but sadly we don’t have as many options as our able-bodied friends,” said Chow, who won the first place in the women’s wheelchair category.
Martin finished behind Mat Sani. The SHM is one of the few runs in the country with categories for the disabled, mentally-challenged, wheelchair-bound and the partially blind, deaf and dumb.the mainstream sporting events.

A number of 3,292 runners came to participate in the competition last year. Among these runners, 2,930 runners were Thai and 362 were foreign runners. Ignoring the health situation, people will have chances of getting sick that will directly affect to the body, family, and economy of such people. Then participants of this competition will include all types of runners such as outstanding runners, amateur runners, school students, and university students.

*** Online registration will end up on 31st July 2009.***

Half Marathon to Help Children

The Fresh Air Fund is looking for runners and sponsors to join our Fresh Air Fund-Racers team for the NYC Half-Marathon on August 16th. This is a great way to participate in NYC's premier summer road race while helping Fresh Air Fund children. Please feel free to repost anything from our site here:
http://freshair.org/racers
Last summer's NYC Half-Marathon was a huge success and the Fresh Air Fund-Racers raised more than $125,000. We are also still in need of Friendly Town hosts for next month. Host families open their hearts and home to a NYC child who would not otherwise have the opportunity to escape the hot, crowded city streets. Please let me know if you are able to post or have any questions, and if you could send me the link that would be fantastic.
Thank you so much,
Sara
