Muniandy to lead the charge

LOCAL road runner R. Muniandy will be leading Team New Balance’s challenge at the New Balance Pacesetters 30km Run scheduled at Padang Merbok on Jan 17.
Muniandy settled for the second spot in the men’s category at the Singapore Marathon this month.
Stream Enterprise marketing manager Wei Chong Hwa confirmed that their sponsored athlete would be featuring for the team at the upcoming event.
Besides staying as a staunch backer of the club’s 15km event over the years, the running brand is now the title sponsor for the fifth edition of the 30km run.
Wei said they were expecting an exciting year ahead with the brand launching a strong global campaign in long distance running.
“Our aim is to continue a long-term partnership with the club to encourage the running community to come together for social gatherings,” he added.
Recently, Pacesetters Athletic Club Malaysia (PACM) president Rustam Affandi Zaihan also received the contributions from other partners for the club’s opening event in the new season.
Among other sponsors are Milo, Power Bar, Nivea, Perkinsdol and Nestle Fitnesse.
And the seasoned campaigners will be tackling a familiar terrain around the Lake Gardens, Bukit Tunku and Sri Hartamas to get to the finishing line.
“The event has been designed to prepare the runners for the 42km distance. The participants have been receptive to the 30km run because it provides them with the opportunity to gauge their endurance before taking up the challenge.
Even the foreigners, especially our northern and southern neighbours, have also been turning up to join the occasion,” Rustam said.
The organisers are expecting 3,000 participants in the 10 categories for the event offering a total of RM23,000 in product vouchers to the winners.
The six categories for the 30km are women’s open (16 years and above), women’s junior open (30 to 34 years), women’s senior veteran (46 years and above), men’s open (16 years and above), men’s junior veteran (40 to 50 years) and men’s senior veteran (51 years and above).
In addition, they have also included the 10km and 20km routes catering to competitors seeking to complete a shorter course.

Running a marathon under the stars

THE first ever night marathon — the Putrajaya Night Marathon (PNM) — will be held at the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya on Feb 6.

About 8,000 participants are expected to show up for the PNM, offering a total cash prize of RM300,000. It is jointly organised by World Action Sports (WAS) and Twenty First Century Sports with support from Putrajaya Corporation (PPj) and sanctioned by the Federal Territory Amateur Athletics Association (FTAAA) and Malaysia Amateur Athletics Union (MAAU).

The PNM was launched by Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin recently. Besides the 42km run, the PNM will have the 21km, 7.7km and 5km fun run.

WAS chairman Tengku Zafrul Aziz said the PNM would be flagged off at 8pm on Feb 6.

“About 3,000 participants have already signed up for the various categories in the PNM. The PNM will be an iconic international running experience that is a must for marathon runners.

“The participants will find the run interesting. It will be cooler and for runners even a degree of difference in temperature can make a big difference,’’ added Zafrul.

An added attraction is that participants will run past some of the most distinctive architecture at night, wide boulevards and open green spaces.

“There is no other marathon in the country that will take on such scenic night routes and the PNM will take runners on the main boulevard of Persiaran Perdana through some of the capital’s key landmarks such as the Putra Bridge, the Prime Minister’s Office and Putra Square,’’ said Zafrul.

Nong Chik said the PNM was in line with the PM’s vision to inject more night life into Putrajaya.

“There is not much night activity in Putrajaya and we believe this one-of-a-kind event will promote both the capital and Malaysia to the world,’’ said Nong Chik.

The registration fee for the full and half marathon is RM40 and RM30 respectively for early birds who register before Jan 10 and RM50 and RM35 thereafter.

It is RM10 for the 7.7km for early birds or RM15 thereafter. The corporate challenge and fun run is fixed at RM500 and RM10 respectively.

End the year with a one-mile dash

The One-Mile Dash: New Year Bash is back and will be organised on a bigger scale starting at the Asian Heritage Row, Kuala Lumpur, on Dec 31.
The organisers, Twenty First Century Sports and Hooha.asia, are expecting about 500 people to take part in the run which will start at 6.30pm.
Organising chairman V. Anand said they were encouraged by the response for last year’s event.
“It was an eye-opener as the participants had a good time. The event was timed in such a way that participants were able to join the New Year countdown at Dataran Merdeka at 10.30pm.
“The support from sponsors was also encouraging. Crocs Prepair are joining us as the title sponsors. Their commitment has motivated us to continue with the event,’’ said Anand after a sponsorship presentation ceremony in Kuala Lumpur.
Besides Crocs Prepair, the other sponsors are 100 Plus, Milo, Nivea, Nature Valley, Salonpas and Mojo Restaurant and Bar.
Participants of the run, sanctioned by the Federal Territory Amateur Athletics Assciation (FTAAA), will start at the Asian Heritage Row and head towards Maju Junction before running along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman and finishing at Dataran Merdeka.
The event has 12 categories.
There will be no cash prize but all participants will receive medals as well as prizes.
Anand said they had pledged RM5,000 to Rumah Sejahtera Wargamas Kuala Kubu Baru.
“We contributed a small amount to the home last year. This year we have increased the amount to RM5,000,’’ said Anand.

Singapore Marathon 2009 Results

Luke Kibet from Kenya had the number one tag, and he lived up to it by once again winning the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon in the men’s elite category — in a course record time.
The 26—year—old clocked 2 hours, 11 minutes, 24 seconds — almost two minutes faster than his winning time last year. He will take home US$35,000 in prize money.
"To win a race is not a joke, to run 42 kilometres, it is a tough race. I’m waiting for the race organisers if they can call me for next year. I will come here for the third time," said Kibet.
Kibet’s double victory in Singapore matches his countryman Amos Matui’s wins in 2005 and 2006.
Johnstone Chepkwony, who clocked 2 hours, 11 minutes, 32 seconds, and Vincent Krop, who clocked 2 hours, 11 minutes, 49 seconds, made it an all—Kenyan sweep of the men’s elite category — all finishing faster than last year’s winning time.
The women’s elite category was won by Russia’s Albina Mayorova Ivanova — in 2 hours, 32 minutes and 47 seconds. This is her second marathon after giving birth to her daughter.
In the Singapore Men’s section, 23—year—old Mok Ying Ren won in his debut of the Marathon. The SEA Games triathlon gold—medallist clocked 2 hours, 43 minutes, 42 seconds.
The Singapore Women’s section was won by Qi Hui in 3 hours, 15 minutes and 25 seconds.
Some 50,000 runners took part this year, and there are hints that next year’s marathon will be bigger.
Oon Jin Teik, CEO, Singapore Sports Council said: "We definitely have more than 50,000 people asking to join in. So, we definitely have plans for next year for a bigger and better one.
"I think this requires a lot of in—depth planning, especially on the route and everything else. But the demand and enthusiasm from the athletes, I think, is where gives us a lot of hope."
